Hate Preacher Pat Robertson Says Without Irony Those Opposed To Trump Are Rebelling Against God.

“You can safely assume that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.” —Anne Lamott

Pat Robertson, the millionaire minister of the Christian Broadcast Network, declared on his 700 Club show yesterday that American citizens that do not support Oval 45 are actually rebelling against God. Brian Tashman, reported this story yesterday for Right Wing Watch, and included the video clip below.

Robertson said:

I think, somehow, the Lord’s plan is being put in place for America and these people are not only revolting against Trump, they’re revolting against what God’s plan is for America. These other people have been trying to destroy America. These left-wingers and so-called progressives are trying to destroy the country that we love and take away the freedoms they love. They want collectivism. They want socialism. What we’re looking at is free markets and freedom from this terrible, overarching bureaucracy. They want to fight as much as they can but I think the good news is the Bible says, “He that sits in the heavens will laugh them to scorn,” and I think that Trump’s someone on his side that is a lot more powerful than the media.

Robertson’s choice of Old Testament verses to support his thesis of Progressives and Liberals “trying to destroy the country we love” is typical of Bible thumpers taking a verse or passage out of context to support a notion that fits their distorted worldview. What we know as the Old Testament is the Christian version of the Hebrew Bible. The two are not the same. The audience for the Old Testament is the Jewish faith and people, not Christians. When Christians attempt to apply the lessons and teachings for ancient Israel to modernity they are straining at gnats while swallowing camels.

False Disciples

Using religion for political purposes is as old as religion itself. Americans have made it an art form. In order for religion to be effective as a tool against an opposing view, the opposition must become an enemy. Robertson has upped the ante from dissenters simply persecuting the church, it’s now considered rebelling against God. If you can convince your sheeple followers that the “enemy” hates your God, you can ensure yourself some very strong and stupid devotees.

If Oval 45 is God’s man for our times, then I am of the sincerely held belief that God must be a madman. The Jesus of the Gospels is a God of unconditional love. He is a Lord of second chances, and third and fourth chances, even unto seventy times seven chances. Oval 45 stands in stark contrast to the teachings of the biblical Jesus. The brown-skinned, homeless, religious radical known as Jesus of Nazareth would not recognize the “Christianity” practiced by today’s conservative religious right.

The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7, is the final chapter of the Sermon on the Mount. This sermon Christ gives is considered by many as one of the best examples of moral teachings ever given. In it, Jesus lays out how we are supposed to live our lives. He also gives some warnings. In verses 15 and 16 he tells his followers to beware of those who would use God for their own purposes.

15 Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? (NLT)

Jesus goes on to warn the false teacher of their fate in verses 21 -23.

Rejecting False Disciples

21 Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Judging Oval 45 by the fruit of his actions, both as a private citizen and now as POTUS, it is obvious to me that he can not represent the biblical image of Christ. He is not only a #FakePresident, he is also a #FakeChristian. Opposing the heartless and mean-spirited agenda of 45 and his Republican administration is a moral duty for those of us who love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
