Trump Sends Message To Women, Reinstates ‘Global Gag Rule’ On Abortion (VIDEO)
Two days after millions of women turned out worldwide to march in protest against Donald Trump, the new president flipped them a symbolic bird. He signed an executive order reinstating what is known as the ‘Global Gag Rule.’
The ‘Global Gag Rule’ prohibits foreign aid or federal funding for any foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that provide either abortions or any information about the procedure. Ronald Reagan first instituted the global gag rule in 1984. Since then, the status of the rule has flip-flopped. Democratic presidents rescind it; Republican presidents reinstate it.
The official title of the order is the ‘Mexico City Policy,’ so named because it was originally announced at the U.N. International Conference on Population — rather fitting, still, for a current president who has taken an aggressive stance toward Mexico’s government and the immigrants who originate there. While the title is misleading, the order explicitly states that any international NGO receiving funds from the U.S. government must agree to “neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.”
Pro-choice groups wasted no time in denouncing the action. Advocacy group Naral Pro-Choice America issued the following statement:
It’s telling that one of Trump’s first executive actions combines two of his favourite things: silencing anyone who disagrees with him and repressing women. Just two days after the historic Women’s March and one day after the anniversary of the historic decision in Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump’s misguided priority is to reinstate… a policy that silences health workers at the expense of their patients.
Republicans, of course, have vowed to wage war on abortion in the United States, with one of their first priorities being to deprive Planned Parenthood of any federal funding. However, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPFF), which provides services in more than 180 countries, made this announcement:
IPFF believes in the right of every individual to decide about their own health and well-being. As an organization that seeks to protect and improve the lives of women, men and children around the world, IPPF and its partners in 170 countries will not sign a policy that denies human rights and puts the lives of women at risk.
Their position will cost the IPFF $100 million in funding from the U.S. government. Trump’s action will potentially deprive 27 million women and couples of crucial reproductive health services.
This is not the first time that IPFF has forsworn federal funds. The organization also did so when George W. Bush reinstated the Global Gag Rule during his administration.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer piously told the press that the policy reflects a value that is important to Trump. Spicer said:
We’re standing up not just for life of the unborn, but for also taxpayer funds that are being spent overseas to perform an action that is contrary to the values of this president.
Two things are clear. First, Trump’s respect for fetuses over women’s rights emerged only once he was campaigning for president. Second, he has declared a War On Women just four days before the annual protest of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade — cynically known as the ‘March for Life’ — that will take place in Washington, D.C.
It there is any doubt about this, take a look below at the video of the signing of three executive orders, with the Global Gag Rule being the last. Trump is surrounded totally by white males. What a surprise.
Women, this Friday, it’s time to take to the streets again. And then again. And again. And again. We can win this war.
